Chapter 6: Lessons Learned
I. Researching Phone Numbers He Has Called
Whether or not your husband has a hidden phone, a time may come when you start to wonder whether there is more than one woman, or even a prostitute habit. As a result, you may want to research all of the phone numbers he has called on either his legitimate or hidden phone. Chapters 1 and 2 included the details of how to use online resources to research phone numbers. If you suspect there may be a number of women, you will need to be substantially more thorough in your searches.
Accessing the Phone Records
An electronic version of his cellphone record provides the most efficient source of his calling history, particularly if it can be sorted by phone number called (or calling) as well as by date. To subpoena the phone records from the provider, you will need the credit card he used to purchase the phone and his phone number. Providers retain calling data for only certain period of time, so you may not receive the data for the entire time period you wish to investigate. Because of this, time is of the essence in acquiring the records.
In my case this was made more difficult because Scott had a hidden phone. But once I found the hidden phone numbers in the Hotels.com information, I could subpoena Virgin Mobile for the calling data .and was able to get records for the previous eighteen months. Ten of those months contained calls made before we separated.
Sorting the Data
Investigating the phone records will show who he was calling and texting. More than that, you can determine how many times he called or texted each number and over what time frame. The number of calls and texts will give an indication of the intensity of his relationship. The timeframe shown by the calls may be enlightening when placed against your family timeline of events. For example, was he contacting an affair partner while you were away on business?
Unfortunately, your data are unlikely to be organized by number called or texted. Instead, your detailed calling record will contain the calls and texts that came in, sorted by the date they were made. The example below shows a portion of the excel spreadsheet I received from Virgin Mobile. It shows the calls and texts, as they occurred by date (see Start Date Below). One of Scott’s hidden phone numbers was (774) 286-0689. You can see below, for example, he both made and received calls from (201) 919-6415 on December 21, 2011. The latter number is the cell phone of Miss New Jersey. Of note as well, a call of 0 seconds duration is a text so it appears they were texting quite a bit.
I resorted the data to organize it by the phone number calling (Calling Number), the phone number called (Called Number) and Start Date. Now I could see all of the calls and texts he made to any given phone number and the dates these contacts occurred. The resorted file below shows, for example, he received numerous texts from someone at (212) 470-8660 from late March through early April of 2012. By going to the portion of the sorted file that showed Scott’s number as the Calling Number, then looking at the numbers he called or texted (Called Number), I could verify he was texting this number back as well.
With this resorted file, I could list the phone numbers of Scott’s phone and text contacts. I could also count up the number of calls or texts to and from any phone number. Finally, I could identify the timeframe during which these calls and texts occurred. In doing so, I identified approximately 75 phone numbers I wanted to research.
Advanced Phone Investigation
In Chapter 1, I outlined how to use reverse phone search engines to identify the name and address associated with a phone number. I suggested a number of steps including
- Using multiple search engines (such as Spokeo, Free PhoneTracer, Spy Dialer and others) as they sometimes produce different information
- Running name and address searches on the info produced by the phone search as you may get additional information
- Searching the name in multiple permutations (e.g. Wendi Morton, Wendi Masterson, Wendi Masterson Morton)
- Google searching the phone number in quotes in all permutations (e.g. “917-500-0466”, “9175000466”, “(917) 500-0466”).
In Chapter 2, I showed how Googling the name (in quotes and in multiple permutations as above) can produce a wealth of on-line information, including images.
There are a number of other methods to maximize the on-line information you can uncover. These include
- Entering the name and person’s location in the same Google search.
- Entering the phone number and location in the same Google search.
- Entering the phone number or name and escort in the same Google search. This may produce her ad on an escort website.
The examples given below show the treasure trove of information I uncovered, starting with the phone number:
Example 1: 646-387-6196: Yasmine Chen
Example 2: 347-334-1733: Sandra Smith
Example 3: 843-819-9594: Melissa Taylor
Example 4: 917-500-0466: Sexy KatelynExample 5: 917-702-1947: Tamra Lynn Anton
Example 6: Debra Davis, Las Vegas
II. Hard Copy Profile Packets
For every phone number, you should assemble a hard copy packet of everything you have uncovered. You will need to take screen shots of all of the web pages you have found through your on-line research. The images I included in the above examples were taken from the screenshots I provided in my profile packets.
In each packet, include a copy of all of the calls and texts made to and from the number. I separated these calls from the original spreadsheet and printed a copy of just those calls and texts. If your on-line research produces information, include screen shots of everything you have found. If you can’t find anything, label the packet Jane Doe and number the Jane Doe packets. The area code of the phone number may at least indicate where she lives (unless she got the phone in one place and lives in another).
The example below shows the profile packet I assembled for 310-623-0694: Marcia Andruck, Los Angeles
Scott Texting Marcia Andruck: 3/26/2012 through 6/25/2012
Marcia Andruck texting Scott: 3/26/12 – 6/25/12
Reverse Phone Searches
Google Searches
I googled two different permutations, Marcia Andruck escort and Marcia Andruck Beverly Hills (city listed in one of the reverse phone searches)
III. Summary Phone Call Spreadsheet
As an additional step in summarizing your research, you should build a phone call spreadsheet showing the history of who was called and when. This summary can be used to show patterns in his behavior over time.
I built my spreadsheet by counting the number of calls and texts per week for each of the numbers I had tracked. I built two sheets, one for calls and one for texts. An excerpt from each of the spreadsheets is shown below.
I organized the phone numbers by location so I could color code where the women were from (red for New Jersey, orange for the Bay area, lime green for Seattle, etc.)
I also added in any information I had about his weekly business expenses to connect his call pattern to his business travel. For each locale, I indicated whether he had stayed at a hotel for work (Work Hotel line) and whether he had restaurant or other charges (H,R,O line). The Cash line indicates he withdrew cash from the joint checking account at a bank branch in that city.
This spreadsheet helped me put the pieces together for my lawyers. For example, the above shows he was texting and calling a woman named Sally Lynch in Seattle in late March. He had a business trip to Seattle at that time as well, and spent a large amount of money each night for dinner. He withdrew $1600 in cash in Seattle during the business trip. Putting it together, it appears he arranged for an expensive hook up on his business trip.
A clear calling pattern emerged which I could detail for my lawyers. It showed frequent contact with three to four women at any given time. Miss New Jersey and Miss Connecticut were two of those women. Added to them was a series of “regular” girls in New York, each of whom he called and texted frequently over about a three-month period.
My private detective later had a phone conversation with one of the New York regulars. When shown Scott’s picture, she said she knew him as “Bill.” She admitted to having sex with him over a three-month period. He would pay her in cash, $500 to $600 per visit, leaving the cash in a card. Scott told her his wife had an illness making sex painful for her. As a man with needs, he therefore looked elsewhere for it. He promised to set her up in an apartment, a typical sugar baby arrangement, but then abruptly disappeared. This information explained Scott’s shorter term girlfriends, most of whom were in their twenties and thirties. He would promise to be their sugar daddy and string them along with cash payments. When then pressed to be a regular sugar daddy, he would split and move on to the next one.
Even all of these women weren’t enough for him. In addition to his regulars, Scott had briefer contact with many other women in New York City, Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, San Diego, Connecticut, Miami, Northern California, Las Vegas, Seattle, Chicago and Michigan.
Scott was indeed quite the texter. Or maybe the appropriate the appropriate term is sexter? Of course he was particularly active when he left town for business, logging between 50 and 100 texts on the weekdays he worked outside of Boston. I imagine he texted quite a bit when he was driving to and from New Jersey and New York. Safety wouldn’t have been his primary concern. With that amount of texting, it is surprising he never complained of repetitive stress in his texting thumbs.
My phone research showed a far different picture of Scott than the one he had been promoting to me and everyone else. He was not just an unhappy married man who had fallen in love with someone else. He wasn’t even a 50-year old guy going through a mid-life crisis. The records showed Scott was a prodigious cheater. Perhaps he believed he was an epic lover, despite the fact he paid for all of it. It was sad and embarrassing when you looked at it as closely as I had.
The records indicated Scott spent more time securing than actually having sex. He worked on securing sex at home, at work, on the way to work, on holidays and on vacations. That was just the texting! Who knows how much time he spent on the internet searching for sex, or emailing from his three hidden emails!
I was starting to feel like a character in a made-for-tv movie. A BAD made-for-tv movie..
