Chapter 8: Birthday Benders

My lawyers asked if I could write vignettes about Scott’s behavior – snapshots of what he was doing at particular points in time. They thought this would be helpful in preparing their deposition and trial questions – for both him and me. I thought it was a great idea. It would serve the additional purpose of continuing to help me unearth what he had been up to. I was hell bent on visualizing what he had been doing, as if this would in some way explain WHY he was doing it. It didn’t of course but was eye-popping nonetheless.

It took me some time to determine how to organize the mounds of evidence into an overall picture from which I could identify and write the vignettes. In all, I wrote six vignettes. Were the six comprehensive? Certainly not. Had I continued to poke around in the four years’ worth of data, I could have found many more. Were they the worst examples of his behavior? They were indeed really bad, but I suspect I could have found worse too. I stopped at six because I just couldn’t stomach looking at it any more. I had visualized enough and it was not a pretty picture.

What follows are two of the vignettes I developed. The first shows Scott’s behavior before a romantic trip we took in February of 2012, “Happy Valentine’s Day to Me, Miss New Jersey and the Rest of the Harem.” The second, “Birthday Benders” shows how Scott really lived it up around his birthday. I guess he thought he had earned it.

Happy Valentine’s Day to Me, Miss New Jersey and the Rest of the Harem!

We had always enjoyed our long weekends with Eric and Lena, rotating one year in Europe, the next in the US. Europe was on tap for our 2012 trip, the four of us deciding to meet in Barcelona in February. We traveled to Barcelona on February 16 (Thursday) and came back on February 21 (Tuesday). It was a romantic and sexy weekend in a beautiful hotel overlooking Barcelona.

But there was also Valentine’s Day, which we wanted to celebrate together, while Scott was working in New York City. Earlier the same week, I traveled down to stay with him at his hotel and had a romantic evening on the 14th. In all, we shared quite a bit of quality time. He certainly couldn’t claim there was a lack of sex!

I wasn’t the only one Scott was romancing around Valentine’s Day, though rutting with prostitutes brings a disturbing picture to the term “romance.” He left for New York City on Monday, February 13 saying he had work there Monday through Wednesday before our Barcelona departure on Thursday. On Monday, he withdrew $500 from an ATM near our home in Massachusetts and withdrew an additional $600 when he got to NYC. Why he didn’t withdraw the $1,100 in one bank visit is a mystery. Multiple bank stops on the same day were a common pattern for him though. Was that part of the magic?

Monday night he spent over $300 at Koi Restaurant in New York City. The amount of the bill and the cash withdrawals surely meant he had company, specifically company costing $1,100 a night. He filed neither his expensive hotel nor the restaurant bill as a business expense.

He was quite busy on his hidden phone on February 13, calling and texting two women in New Jersey and five women in New York City. Of course one of the women was Miss New Jersey. Who was the lucky one who earned the cash and dinner on February 13? Hard to tell, but my guess is it was one of the New Yorkers.

I showed up on the afternoon of February 14 for our racy Valentine’s date, complete with the sexy lingerie. I can’t even describe how gross it now feels knowing on February 13 he was in bed screwing a prostitute and the next night he was in the same bed screwing me!

We were off to Barcelona on February 16 and came back on February 20. At least he didn’t make or take any calls on his hidden phone while we were in Spain. What a gentleman!

We came back from Barcelona on separate flights on Tuesday, February 21. He went to New York City for work and I went returned home to Boston. He said his work schedule required him to be in New York on February 22. He stayed at his usual (five star) hotel and had another expensive dinner, not expensed for business. On the day he arrived back in New York City, he also withdrew $850 from our joint bank account.

He phoned and texted Miss New Jersey and eight women from New York City on his hidden phone on February 21 and 22. It must have been difficult to find a prostitute on such short notice!

Birthday Benders

Among Scott’s most active extracurricular times was his birthday, November 26, which coincidentally often occurred during Thanksgiving week. Lots of women, lots of money, and lots of places! His exploits were all the more noticeable because they took place during the busiest travel time of the year, a time when most sane people would do anything NOT to be on the road or in a plane. 2009 and 2010 are great examples of how he celebrated.

2009

Scott’s birthday fell on Thanksgiving Day in 2009. On Sunday of that week (November 22) he traveled to Philadelphia, saying he had business in Philly on Monday. After his appointment, he would drive to New York City and come home from there. He stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia on Sunday night and spent $550 at a steakhouse. Neither charge was expensed. He had withdrawn $1000 from our joint account the previous Friday. Was that the hooker rate in Philadelphia?

Scott stocked up on cash when he got home, withdrawing $1,500 near our home on Monday, November 23.

He continued to party after Thanksgiving, staying at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown NY on Monday, the Sheraton in Mahwah, NJ on Tuesday and the Ritz Carlton in Westchester, NY on Wednesday. He must of spent the $1,500 on Monday as he withdrew an additional $4,300 in New Jersey on Tuesday. He did manage to get some work in as he expensed the Doubletree and the Sheraton.

To top it off, he made spent $4,200 at Lord & Taylor in New York City on Tuesday. How do you even find a way to spend $4,200 at a store like Lord & Taylor? Surely he saw Miss New Jersey on Tuesday but I am guessing he was with other women in Tarrytown and Westchester.

Let’s review: a hooker in Philadelphia before Thanksgiving, a hooker in Tarrytown the Monday after, Miss New Jersey on Tuesday (and a tacky $4,200 gift) and a hooker in Westchester on Wednesday. While he was amusing himself after Thanksgiving, I was away on business so the girls were left alone with the au pair on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Sad to say he prioritized his hidden life over time spent with his kids too.

2010

Scott’s birthday behavior was even crazier in 2010. His birthday was the Friday after Thanksgiving that year. Scott and I had spent the weekend before (November 13 and 14) celebrating his birthday in Vermont. Just the two of us, romantic and lots of sex. Apparently, it was only the appetizer.

He impressively stayed at four hotels the week before Thanksgiving. Monday night was the Sheraton in Mahwah,NJ. He must have taken Miss New Jersey to an expensive dinner, which of course was not expensed. On Tuesday, he had credit card charges for stays at two swanky hotels, the Ritz Carlton in Westchester NY and the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut (each over $500 per room). Did he even work that day, or was he merely driving from hook up to hook up?

He also charged stays at two hotels on Wednesday, the Sheraton in Mahwah (again) and the Tarrytown House in Tarrytown, NY. As it turns out, two hotel charges on the same day was something he did quite a bit. Hooking up with two women in one day — do I smell an obsession?

Somebody got an $800 present from Nordstrom in Paramus NJ on Thursday. Did he buy something for Miss New Jersey because he felt guilty about double cheating on the woman he was cheating with?

Scott must have liked whomever he hooked up with at the Mohegan Sun because he went back on the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week and again spent over $500 for the room. Of course, his cover story was he had to travel for business that day. He also charged $288 to Mohegan Sun Transportation, which was notable because my private investigator had explained prostitutes often run their charges through taxi and transportation companies instead of taking cash.

Scott continued to celebrate his birthday after Thanksgiving. He went back to visit Miss New Jersey on November 29, the Monday after Thanksgiving and stayed at the Sheraton in Mahwah on Monday and Tuesday. He must have done some work in New Jersey as he expensed the hotel. Scott also stayed at a hotel in Burlington, MA on Wednesday of the week and charged an expensive dinner at a steakhouse there. Burlington is less than 45 minutes from our home, so it doesn’t take a Ph.D to know what he was doing there. He again left the girls with the au pair as I was out of town Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Scott tapped our credit line, withdrawing $7,000 in cash to pay for his birthday spree that November. We must not have had enough cash in our checking or savings accounts. This was a new low.

That is a lot of action! Two hotel hook ups a day, a hook up close to home and plenty of time with Miss New Jersey. He must have been overcome with his version of guilt because in mid December, he gave me the $25K upgraded engagement/wedding rings (I later dubbed them “the Kobe Bryant rings”). At least I outranked Miss New Jersey on the guilt buy. Though his remorsefulness didn’t go far. He purchased the second hidden phone in December too.
